" New Year, New Me"... I disagree!

less overwhelm less stress more clarity more energy Jan 05, 2025

Hello Sunshine,

Ah, the start of a new year—a time when the world seems to collectively decide that we should all reinvent ourselves. "New Year, New Me!" is everywhere. But let’s hit pause on that for a second. Because, honestly? I don’t buy into it.

It’s not a “new me” that I’m chasing—it’s the best version of me that I need. And guess what? Some of that already exists in my past, some in my present, and some parts I’ll be working toward in my future.

For me, at 52, I find myself yearning for the carefree days and boundless energy of my 20s and early 30s. Maybe for you, your "best you" looks completely different. And that’s the beauty of it.

But here’s the kicker: negating who we are, dismissing our worth, and feeling the need to completely overhaul ourselves? That mindset doesn’t help us. In fact, it’s part of the very problem that’s fueling so much of today’s stress, overwhelm, and health crises.

Let’s talk about why this “new me” narrative is doing us no favors and, more importantly, what we can do instead.

The Problem with “New Year, New Me”

Have you noticed how this mentality seems to scream, " You're worthless. “You’re just not good enough”? It’s subtle but dangerous. It tells your brain that the current you—your experiences, quirks, and strengths—isn’t worth keeping.

Think about it. This kind of thinking feeds into the comparison culture we’re drowning in. Whether it’s the pressure to keep up with the Joneses, jump on every TikTok trend, or follow the next big health guru on Instagram, we’re overwhelmed with ideas of what we “should” be.

And where has all that gotten us? Disconnected from ourselves and everyone around us. Burnt out and Anxious. The constant feeling that we’re not doing enough or being enough. That stops now.

The Best Version of You

Here’s what I believe: The best version of you doesn’t mean scrapping everything you are. It’s about building on the foundation you already have. You don’t need to erase your past to create your future. In fact you need it because it is part of who you are.

And let’s be real: life is already overwhelming enough. The last thing we need is to add more pressure ,more chaos, or more unrealistic expectations to the mix.

What if, instead of chasing everyone else's idea of perfection, you focused on small, consistent actions that align with the life YOU want? What if you didn’t need to turn everything upside down to start feeling better?

The Power of One Minute

You don’t need a three-hour morning routine or a massive life overhaul to start creating change. You just need one minute.

That’s right—just one minute a day.

I know what you’re thinking: “Can one minute really make a difference?” The answer is a resounding yes.

Here’s why:

  1. You Can Commit to One Minute
It’s easy, manageable, and doesn’t feel overwhelming. And when something feels doable, you’re more likely to stick with it.
  2. Small Actions Create Big Shifts
When you show up for yourself, even for just 60 seconds, you’re building a habit. And that habit becomes momentum. Trust me, I've seen hundreds of shifts in my clients over the years.
  3. You’ll Feel the Change
The magic of these micro-practices is that you feel the results almost immediately. Whether it’s a quick burst of energy, a moment of clarity, or a little smile creeping across your face, that one minute matters.

A New Year, A New Approach

So, let’s forget about the “New Year, New Me” nonsense. Instead, let’s focus on something more meaningful, more sustainable, and—dare I say it—more enjoyable.

Because after all, the BEST practice/lifestyle/routine is the ONE YOU ACTUALLY STICK TO!

Here’s what I’m asking you to do:

  • Commit to one minute a day. That’s it.
  • Use that time to try a simple routine that energizes you, clears your head, and puts a smile on your face.
  • And then? Watch what happens.

By the end of the week, you’ll notice subtle but significant changes—in your energy levels, in how you react to stress, and in your overall mood. By the end of the month? Well, sunshine, just wait and see.

Your One-Minute Challenge

Life is already chaotic, and you don’t need more pressure. What you need is a small, manageable way to STOP THE NOISE, to connect with your heart and build a routine that works for you and only you.

So, what do you say? Are you ready to start with one minute?

Final Thoughts

This year, how about you  stop chasing perfection. Instead,  embrace who you are while working toward who you want to become. Create the changes you need to improve your life. The best version of you is already within reach—all it takes is one small step at a time.

Here’s to a year of growth, grace, and small steps that lead to big shifts.
